Design as a verb

Today starts a journey to explore and better articulate what I believe about design, technology, and leadership.

Why?

Design is such a powerful tool. I’ve always believed that design can make the world a better place. At its core, good design is human-centric. It communicates effectively. It creates value. It makes life richer and more delightful.

I’ve always loved that design is both a noun and a verb. As a noun, design is the output. You can see it, touch it, hear it, feel it. And this is no easy feat because design is a craft that primarily lives in the business world.

Yet design as a verb excites me the most. Verbs are all about action and doing. As a verb, design is a process… it’s a way of thinking and problem solving that can be applied to anything. When design is used as a verb, it makes businesses more profitable. It helps teams collaborate more effectively. It inspires creativity and innovation.

I am committed to exploring design as a verb—with an emphasis on technology and leadership. By no means am I an expert on this topic… yet I know I have stories and reflections to share. Especially based on my journey from being a design leader to a leader with a design background.

Over the course of two decades, technology has drastically evolved. My role shifted to people management. I learned from my mistakes. And my thoughts and beliefs have grown. So my hope in all of this is to simply inspire and empower the next generation of design leaders.
